How to Flip the Class
Submitted by Alison Weslake
What challenge, problem or motivation inspired you to make one small change?
I’ve never implemented the “flipped classroom” approach before but I was studying it through my Masters of Professional Education program with Western University as an assignment. I pretty much wanted to explore all aspects of this approach, and because it has to do with technology being implemented in the classroom, I wanted to do my assignment using technology. I also wanted to highlight the benefits of using technology and how it can cater to different learning preferences.
Tell us about your one small change:
In my Masters course, we had to explore different learning theories through the semester and different ways to implement certain methods of teaching so I chose to explore the flipped classroom model which is fairly new to me. We had to create a pedagogical resource tool for teachers so I wanted to do something that would be beneficial to other educators, that would be interesting to them and engaging to students.
Since flipping the classroom often uses technology, I developed an infographic and Prezi presentation that educators could refer to. Here is the PDF of the Prezi. The infographic covers the basics of the flipped classroom approach and the Prezi goes into detail about each of the categories I highlighted. So rather than writing a paper, I wanted to stick with the creative aspects of the assignment and use Prezi with a visual infographic as a reference tool.
What was the result of your one small change?
Although this was an assignment in my Masters program, I am hoping I can share this so that it could help other educators implement the flipped classroom approach in certain areas of their teaching or through their entire course.
