What is Copilot AI? 

Microsoft Copilot is an artificial intelligence assistant that’s been developed through a collaboration between Microsoft and OpenAI. It a generative AI tool designed to assist users by providing information, answering questions, and engaging in conversation. It can answer questions, explain and summarize concepts, generate text and images, proofread writing, brainstorm ideas, and much more.

Copilot does not save conversation history and employs robust security measures to protect personal and company data. This makes it a relatively safe tool for exploring a wide range of topics.

Accessing Microsoft Copilot on the Web

  • Navigate to copilot.microsoft.com.
  • Click ‘Sign in’ and then ‘Sign in with a work or school account’.
  • Use your Cambrian email and password to sign into your Microsoft account.
  • Start chatting with Copilot! Try one of the suggested prompts below or create your own.

What Can I Do With Copilot?

Here are some types of tasks Copilot can help you accomplish.

    • Lesson Planning: Copilot can generate lesson plans or suggest activities and resources to include in your lessons.
      “Create a lesson plan on Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ that includes a discussion on power and ambition.”
      “Can you suggest creative in-class activities to help teach the concept of conflict resolution?”
    • Assignment/Case Study Creation: Copilot can draft assignment prompts and case studies. You can provide a topic with some details and Copilot can generate a draft for you.
      “Draft an assignment where students must develop a business plan for a hypothetical startup in the renewable energy sector.”
      “Design a case study of a patient with congestive heart failure. Include a focus on the pathophysiology and treatment options.”
    • Question Creation: Use Copilot to create test questions in various formats (try multiple-choice, essay, or matching questions). You can even ask Copilot to generate questions based on a text.
      “Can you create ten multiple-choice questions related to the function of the hippocampus in memory formation?”
    • Rubric Creation: Ask Copilot to help you generate a rubric to ease your grading.
      “Create a detailed rubric for a research paper that evaluates students on research depth, analysis, organization, citation accuracy, and writing clarity. Include a 5-point scale for each criterion.”
    • Research: If you’re researching a new topic, Copilot can provide information and suggest resources.
      “Suggest some recent studies on the effects of physical therapy on chronic back pain.”
      “How does a QR code work? Provide a simple explanation.”
    • Technical Questions: Ask Copilot to give you instructions on how to do something and it will provide step-by-step instructions for you.

      “Can you explain the steps involved in grading a Moodle assignment?”
    • Email Drafting: Copilot can assist in drafting emails and other forms of communication. Provide the main points and Copilot will draft the rest.
      “Draft an email to my students reminding them about the upcoming midterm exam and providing study tips.”
    • Meeting Minutes: After a meeting, you can provide the key points discussed, and Copilot can draft detailed meeting minutes.
      “Here are the key points from our recent faculty meeting: [insert key points]. Can you help me format these into structured meeting minutes?”
    • Document Review: Copilot can review documents for grammar, punctuation, and style.
      “Here is a draft syllabus for my new course: [insert draft syllabus]. Can you check it for any punctuation or stylistic errors?”
    • Coding Assistance: If your work involves coding, Copilot can assist with writing, reviewing, or debugging code.
      “I’m teaching a course on web development. Can you create a simple HTML and CSS example to demonstrate to my students?”
      “Can you help me debug this line of code? [Insert code].”

Safety and Privacy

The web version of Microsoft Copilot is designed with a focus on data privacy and security, ensuring compliance with international privacy laws.

  • Data Protection: Your data isn’t used to train Copilot’s AI models. It only shows data that users have permission to view. It does not save a history of your conversations.
  • Data Storage: Your prompts and Copilot’s responses are processed and stored within the Microsoft 365 environment. This is done to ensure data privacy and security.
  • Web Content: Copilot can use information from the web in its responses. There are built-in mechanisms to filter out inappropriate content and avoid generating responses that could be considered offensive or harmful.
  • Content Ownership: You or your organization own the content that Copilot creates.
