Allow for Student Absences or Tardiness

This accommodation is provided when a student’s disability impacts their ability to regularly attend classes (e.g. students dealing with unpredictable periods of ill health).

Early discussions in the semester between the student and instructor/faculty member will provide clearer expectations for both.

This accommodation should be requested by the student on an as-needed basis.

Excessive absenteeism may affect a student’s ability to participate in and successfully meet course/program learning outcomes.

Faculty Responsibility

  • When you receive an accommodation letter, reach out to the student via email to invite a discussion regarding the nature/frequency of absences with the student (without disclosure of disability-related information).

  •  A plan with the student at the onset will make expectations and needs known.

Student Responsibility

  • It is the student’s responsibility to meet/discuss with the instructor/faculty in a timely manner about disability-related absences.

  • When the student misses a class for a disability-related reason, they are expected to contact the instructor/faculty to inform them of their absence, citing their absenteeism accommodation.

  • The student should inform faculty in advance of an absence whenever possible, or as soon as possible after a class has been missed.

  • Students with this accommodation are responsible for all missed academic material.
