Why Patterns Matter: Designing Accessible, Predictable Moodle Courses

May 14 @ 2:30 pm - 3:15 pm

In this session, participants will explore how predictability and consistent design patterns reduce cognitive load and support accessibility in online learning environments. Using concepts from Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and the POUR accessibility framework, we will examine how structure, hierarchy, labels, and visual cues help learners navigate digital spaces more effectively. Participants will see practical examples of predictable Moodle course design, including the use of weekly structure, recognizable layouts, and visual organization strategies, along with a demonstration of a custom label and icon generator tool developed to support accessible course design.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how predictability and consistent patterns impact cognitive load in digital learning environments
  • Recognize how patterns support accessibility through the UDL and POUR frameworks
  • Apply predictable weekly structure, hierarchy, and visual cues within Moodle course design

Participants will leave with practical strategies for creating clearer, more accessible, and easier-to-navigate Moodle learning environments.
