SUMMARY:Beyond Surveillance: The Case Against AI Detection and AI Proctoring [external]
DESCRIPTION:Are you an educator seeking a supportive space to critically examine AI surveillance tools? This workshop is for you.   \nIn an era where AI increasingly pervades education\, AI detection and proctoring have sparked significant controversy. These tools\, categorized as academic surveillance software\, algorithmically monitor behaviour and movements. Students are increasingly forced to face them. Together\, we will move beyond surveillance toward a culture of trust and transparency\, shining a light on the black box of surveillance and discussing our findings.   \nIn this two-hour workshop\, we will explore AI detection and proctoring through a 40-minute presentation\, an hour of activities and discussion\, and 20 minutes of group tool evaluation using a rubric.   \nRegister Now!\nThis session will be recorded\, archived\, and made available publicly on BCcampus.ca. By participating in this session\, you acknowledge you are aware your participation will be recorded and the recording will be openly available. \nAbout the Facilitator: Ian Linkletter (he/him) is an emerging technology and open education librarian at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. He works to evaluate emerging technologies through a critical lens and implement open education as a social good. Previously\, he worked for 10 years as a learning technology specialist in the Faculty of Education at the University of British Columbia\, where he supported every online course.  \n\nEdTech Sandbox Series Sessions\n\nSeptember 18\, 2024 — Beyond Surveillance: The Case Against AI Detection and AI Proctoring\, Ian Linkletter\, BCIT\nOctober 16\, 2024 — Learning Design with ChatGPT: Implications for AI Literacy\, Hajime Kataoka\, UVic\nNovember 6\, 2024 — Design Smarter: Harnessing Canva’s AI for Enhanced Educational Outcomes\, Prabhjot (Prab) Bhamra\, University of Toronto\nJanuary 22\, 2025 — Exploratory Learning: Effectively Integrating AI with Hypothesis\, Julia Grav and Emily Schudel\, Camosun College\nFebruary 26\, 2025 — Exploring Animaker for Teaching and Learning\, Maryam Safa Schneider

SUMMARY:Gen AI and Open Educational Resources in Teaching and Learning [External]
DESCRIPTION:In this session we will discuss the potential of AI in generating dynamic content\, including interactive textbooks\, and its potential in developing open educational resources and practices. We will also engage in discussions about the legal and ethical considerations of both AI and open education including copyright\, privacy\, and open licensing. In this workshop we’ll dive into practical exercises\, including the co-creation of a textbook chapter\, demonstrating the real-world application of AI in OER. \nFacilitators\n\nLucas Wright\, Senior Educational Consultant\, Learning Technology\, CTLT\nWill Engle\, Strategist\, Open Education Initiatives\, CTLT\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:The Creative and Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Post-Secondary Education – a B.C. Perspective [External]
DESCRIPTION:BCcampus — In the spring of 2023\, we brought the sector together to discuss Artificial Intelligence (AI) in post-secondary education. So much has changed\, and yet\, so many of the same questions and concerns persist. Diving deeper\, our panelists will discuss the creative and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence in post-secondary education. Join us as we explore the different paths we can take through our new academic landscape. You’ll leave this panel discussion with a list of resources related to actionable recommendations for ethical integration of GenAI in higher education. \nRegistration
