Seeing Through the Body with Flashcards

Brenda's Flashcards

Submitted by: Brenda Cliff

What challenge, problem or motivation inspired you to make one small change?

The challenge was having students identify corrective actions required on a radiographic (X-Ray) image for my Medical Radiation Technologist (MRT) course. The students were struggling to identify the difference between an image that was acceptable to be used for a diagnosis versus an image where we would have to re-expose (re-scan) the patient.

Tell us about your one small change:

Using H5P technology in Moodle, I created a series of flashcards that showed acceptable X-Ray images versus ones that required correction. I also used H5P Course Presentation to design a series of multiple choice questions that asked students to decide if the image was acceptable or required repeating. This was a required activity in the course and is reflective of the judgement needed on the national certification exam for MRTs.

What was the result of your one small change?

Students have told me that these activities are reinforcing their foundational knowledge and will be better preparing them for their clinical placements. In clinical placement, students have direct supervision, indirect supervision and then some independence. These activities are self-directed and therefore would be something that students would see in the field.
