Making Copyright More CLEAR

What challenge, problem or motivation inspired you to make one small change?
Our faculty are very copyright-conscious, and often ask me what they are allowed to do with material they find in our library’s databases. In special instances I would have to review the license information, but often my responses were the same as we have standard license language for many resources that allow for activities that are typical for educational purposes. We thought it would be great if faculty could get this information more easily.
Tell us about your one small change:
We decided to implement the College Library Electronic Access Rights (CLEAR) tool into our Library search function. CLEAR provides a simple interface for entering and displaying summaries of permitted uses identified in library resource licence agreements.
What was the result of your one small change?
When searching online library resources, Faculty and students can now click on “Permitted Uses” associated with an item record to see a short summary that answers questions such as “Can I post a copy in Moodle?” or “Can I link to it?”. The summary will simply tell them “Yes”, “No”, or “Ask”, in which case they can ask the library.
