Writing in Community and Justice Services - Open Textbook Project

What challenge, problem or motivation inspired you to make one small change?

Students were required to purchase a course textbook that described workplace documents. This textbook is $90+. The textbook was very basic and wouldn’t provide any more information that could be easily found freely online!

Tell us about your one small change:

The students created a course textbook using Pressbooks. This open source textbook includes information about all workplace documents students would need to learn about before going into the field, including descriptions and multiple examples of each. Students worked in groups and each group worked on one chapter each. Then, students taught their chapter to their peers.

What was the result of your one small change?

The students found it valuable to dedicate their time to curating one chapter then teaching it to their peers. Of course, they also liked saving money on textbooks! They love that this textbook is open and published with their names on it! Plus, they will be able to access this textbook from anywhere at any point during their career that they need to refer back to the workplace document descriptions and examples!
