First rule about book club: Let’s talk about book club!
About the Book Club
Book Club in the Hub is a new way to collaborate and learn as a group. Each month, Book Club members will read a section of the feature book, then come together to discuss their thoughts and ideas about the reading.
After the book has been read and discussed, the winter semester will be used as an opportunity to participate in a community of practice whereby faculty implement one new strategy highlighted in the book and try it in the classroom. The Book Club will continue to meet in the second semester to discuss the successes and challenges in implementing that new strategy.
It’s a chance to learn together, act together, reflect together and collaborate together with your fellow Cambrian colleagues.
About the Book
Our very first Book Club book will be Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty, written by Dr. James M. Lang. It is a constructive guide for educators about dealing with academic dishonesty.
A culmination of Dr. Lang’s research, Cheating Lessons reveals why post-secondary students tend to cheat, and strategies to improve learning environments to deter cheating.
A free hard-copy of the book will be provided to you as a Book Club in the Hub member.
Book Club Meetings
For our very first Book Club in the Hub, meetings are scheduled over the span of three months during the fall 2018 semester, leading up to an implementation of a new classroom strategy in the winter 2019 semester.
There are three sections in the book Cheating Lessons:
- Building a Theory of Cheating
- The (Nearly) Cheating-free Classroom
- Speaking About Cheating
There will be three Book Club meetings, each meeting will cover one section of the book, and will give you a chance to discuss and reflect as a group.
The meetings will be held from October to December, 2018.
- Meeting #1- October 22nd, 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Meeting #2- November 26th, 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Meeting #3- December 17th, 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
