SUMMARY:Designing and Publishing OERs: Creator Panel Discussion [External]
DESCRIPTION:This panel discussion features OER creators who have recently completed the Specialized OER and Ancillary Resources project. Want to hear from others about taking your project from idea to final product? Creators for the project represent the diversity of OER developers: some were individuals and others project teams\, some developed textbooks and others multimedia content\, and some had no experience creating OERs while others did. Panelists will share their insights regarding development\, using different platforms\, along with challenges and successes to help future creators. Attendees will be able to submit questions or topics of interest when registering for the session. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Developing AI-Powered Researchers: Integrating Generative AI into College Information Literacy Instruction [External]
DESCRIPTION:Facilitators: Brittany Davis\, Heather Beirne\, Cindy Judd\, and Trenia Napier \nAI-powered technologies are dramatically influencing how information is produced\, shared\, and consumed. To effectively and ethically navigate this new\, rapidly changing information ecosystem\, college students must be equipped with both information literacy and AI literacy. This workshop will explore how to integrate AI literacy into college information literacy instruction\, covering key concepts such as: \n\nbest practices to help students effectively utilize text generators for research\, including prompt formulation\, iterative querying\, and output quality assessment;\npartnering with instruction librarians to design AI-integrated learning experiences that situate AI interaction and evaluation skills within the research process;\nactive learning activities for thoughtful AI interaction; and\ncritically thinking about misinformation and bias.\n\nParticipants will gain a better understanding of how to equip students with the information literacy skills they need to thrive in an AI-driven workplace. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Unlocking the potential: Open Educational Practices and the Digital Transformation of Work-Integrated Learning Experiences [External]
DESCRIPTION:This presentation delves into the transformative potential of open education in dismantling barriers for experiential learning within language minority contexts and in fostering an inclusive educational landscape. \nWe will first explore the concepts of experiential learning\, work-integrated learning (WIL)\, and open educational resources (OER)\, as well as provide context surrounding the creation of our OERs\, namely that this work has been spearheaded under the Consortium d’apprentissage expérientiel francophone de l’Ontario (CAPFO) program of eCampusOntario. \nWe will then dive into two OERs created within the context of CAPFO. The first OER will showcase our survey results from the WIL CAPFO Report in 2023 that canvas trends and challenges in the franco-ontarian sector. These insights will be complemented by an exploration of the WIL Framework\, a strategic tool developed within the CAPFO context to bolster educator engagement. \nBy sharing our experiences\, outcomes\, and collaborative frameworks\, we aim to inspire educators and institutions to embrace the power of open education in cultivating enriching experiential learning environments\, especially within language minority settings. \nWe are looking to share valuable insights and contribute to the ongoing discourse on the intersection of open education\, experiential learning\, and linguistic minorities to pave the way for a more accessible and inclusive educational future. \nThis presentation will help the audience explore the power of open education in breaking down barriers for experiential education in a language minority context. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Cancelled – Using TikTok to take your Moodle page from mid to based
DESCRIPTION:This session has been cancelled until further notice. Sorry for the inconvenience!  \nFor many of us\, writing\, recording and editing video content for a Moodle page can be an awkward\, difficult\, and frustrating process.  (And if we have to update it on an annual or semi-annual basis\, too? Oh\, no …) But would you believe that one of the most popular and user-friendly apps out there – TikTok – can actually help you save time and energy? \nJoin Neil Shyminsky\, Professor in the School of General Studies and Academic Upgrading for this in-person session where he will share examples of how he has used TikTok to create focused\, mini-lectures in two of his virtual courses – and\, in one\, also hosted the videos on TikTok itself.  (Though TikTok\, like any video production platform\, comes with advantages AND drawbacks\, which we’ll also discuss.) \nFor those who are interested in trying it themselves\, he will also walk you through the remarkably quick and easy process of recording\, editing\, and posting a video. \nLearning Outcomes \nParticipants will: \n\nlearn how to add TikTok to your repertoire of recording options\ncompare advantages of drawbacks of TikTok for mini-lectures in virtual courses.\n\nUse the button below to sign up for this workshop.

SUMMARY:Teaching and Learning with Compassion
DESCRIPTION:While classrooms are intended to be safe and healthy environments that foster learning\, the stress and politics embedded within them often create situations that can breed anxiety and even animosity – both for instructors and students. \nIn this workshop\, participants will explore the role of kindness\, empathy\, and compassion in the classroom. Working closely with classroom scenarios\, we will address the various ways that compassion can be used to help facilitate teaching and learning. We will also be discussing the role of “trigger warnings\,” self-care\, personal boundaries\, and clear expectations in considering our interactions with students. \nThe aim of the workshop is to work as a group to develop pedagogical strategies in response to these concepts and experiences\, so that we can work to minimize stressful interactions and foster improved learning environments. \n Facilitator: Dr. Victoria Kannen (Professor of Sociology\, Schools of Justice\, Community Services\, and General Studies) \nLearning Outcomes\nParticipants will: \n\nConsider the ways that being compassionate can foster more productive learning environments\nRecognize the importance of content warnings and language-use as elements of compassionate teaching\nEngage with peers about pedagogical strategies that help avoid classroom anxieties and foster healthy interactions with students\n\nRegister for this session using the button below! \n \nThis session is part of our EDI Series focused on equity\, diversity and inclusion happening in 2023-24 and is part of our Next Level Badging.  Join us for three EDI sessions and earn the EDI Badge.

SUMMARY:The Future of Writing: Creating the Playbook for Human-AI Collaboration [External]
DESCRIPTION:AI is seemingly everywhere. It’s in our news feeds\, commercials\, and increasingly in all of the tech tools we use regularly. The growing ubiquity of different AI capabilities raises a sea of questions for higher education decision-makers and faculty. Chief among them: what does AI mean for the future of writing as a learning\, assessment\, productivity\, and communication tool? \nGrammarly believes that in the era of AI\, writers will need to learn how to become content owners who understand the intent of a writing task\, harness their personal writing abilities\, and know when and how to leverage AI for support. \nJoin Grammarly for Education and two distinguished University of Mississippi faculty members to dive more deeply into this challenging topic for higher education and the workplace. \nREGISTER HERE
